Why did they create these loans?

Texas A&M’s Student Loan Program (SLP) was created to help the university financially. At first, SLP only offered two types of loans:: federal Stafford loans and state student loan grants. However, in 2002, SLP expanded its offerings by introducing private student loans. These loans were set at higher rates than government-backed student loans, but were still cheaper than paying out of pocket for college.

What kind of money does Texas A&M receive each year?

In 2015, Texas A&M received $96 million. Of this amount, $51 million came from federal funds. Another $45.9 million came from state funding. Overall, the school received around $151 million per year.

How many students take advantage of SLPs?

According to Texas A&M, over 90% of eligible undergraduate students enroll in some type of financial aid. In 2014 alone, over 20,000 students applied for these loans.

Who gets the loans?

Students who attend Texas A&M receive the loans regardless of their parents’ income level. Financial need is determined by factors such as family size, parental education levels, number of siblings, and whether or not the student lives at home. Other factors taken into account include how much money the student already receives from scholarships  and if this money covers tuition costs entirely.

Is it possible to receive federal Pell Grants along with SLPs?

Yes. If you have been accepted toto Texas A&M and are receiving financial assistance from either a Pell Grantor a or a Federal Work Study program, then you may qualify for additional funding based on the size of the grant you receive. Depending on the cost of attendance, it is possible to offset some of the loan payments with Pell Grants.
