The university offers two types of loan programs for students seeking financial assistance. The In-State Tuition Loan (ISTL) is a federal program administered by the US Department of Education and provides funds for qualified undergraduate students attending colleges and universities located within the state. A Federal Direct Stafford Loan (FDLS) is a federally guaranteed program operated by the U.S. Department of Education that makes subsidized private loans available to eligible undergraduates at participating schools. Both programs allow borrowers to defer repayment for either 12 months or until completion of their degree program. Borrowers may use loan proceeds for tuition, fees, books, supplies, equipment, room and board, and other expenses related to academic studies while enrolled full time.

University of South Alabama scholarships

Scholarships are awards given to students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement or unusual talent. Scholarships can be earned based upon high grades alone, extra-curricular activities, leadership, community service, sports, artistry, or even being born male or female. Students who qualify for merit scholarships often receive additional scholarship money beyond what they need to pay for college. Most states offer some sort of need-based grant or award system for qualifying students to help ease the burden of paying for higher education. These grants or awards cover tuition costs as well as provide opportunities for cash funding for book costs, technological requirements, and other educational and personal expenses.

How do I apply for a scholarship?

There are several ways to apply for a scholarship. Each school’s application process varies depending on how the scholarship was awarded. If you have received a scholarship directly from the institution, then you should follow its specific guidelines. You can find information about the university’s scholarship program online. If you don’t know whether you were awarded a direct scholarship or a merit scholarship, contact the school’s financial aid office. Schools do not always make that distinction clear, but you can ask them. Many institutions offer additional forms for scholarship applications online. If you are selected, the school will notify you via email.

What if I am not sure which scholarships I qualify for?

If you are unsure which scholarships you qualify for, check out the Financial Aid Office at your chosen institution. Find out if any scholarships are offered by contacting them directly or visiting their website. If you have not been successful in obtaining funding from the institution, start searching nationally. There are many reputable websites where you can search for scholarships. One resource we recommend is FastWeb.com. FastWeb.com allows users to search over 20 different databases. Another useful site is ScholarshipSearch.com. Here, you can search for both national and local scholarships. Check out these sites and keep searching until you find something that works for you. Remember, though, that you will have a better chance of receiving a scholarship if you are able to demonstrate financial need.

The University of South Alabama recently received an award for its student loan program. According to the university’s website, the Sallie Mae Institutional Excellence Award was given in recognition of the school’s successful repayment rate among students who borrow money. As reported by the Sun Journal newspaper, the USA-based company presented the award at the annual conference of the Collegiate Funding Alliance (CFA), a group that represents colleges and universities throughout the United States. According to CFA president David Schuler, the organization hopes to encourage institutions to take advantage of financial aid programs offered through the federal government. Many schools, however, have struggled to keep up with their commitments to repay loans. In addition to awarding the university the prestigious honor, the organization also recognized several other schools for their outstanding efforts to help students pay off their debts, including Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Kansas. Schuler explained that he hoped the awards would encourage other schools to adopt similar practices, thus helping those students who may not have access to enough funds to finish their education.
