Student Loan Consolidation
If you’re in debt right now, chances are you’ve heard about loan consolidation before. A lot of people consider consolidating their loans if they have more than one type of loan. You may want to consolidate your federal Stafford Loans (direct subsidized and unsubsidized), PLUS Loans, and private loans if possible. If you do consolidate, make sure you choose a good lender. There are lots out there, but not all are legitimate. Also, make sure the interest rate you end up paying after consolidation is lower than what you were previously paying.
Debt Negotiation
Negotiate with your lenders. If you decide to try to negotiate, call around to different companies and ask them how much money you’ll need to pay off your loans. Talk to your lender about lowering your monthly payments. In some cases, you may be able to negotiate down to 1% or 0%. Your lenders might also offer a longer-term plan where you pay less each month over 10 years. Before you get started negotiating, though, make sure you know how long you have left to work to pay off your loans!
Pay Off Your Debt Early.
You can pay off your debts early if you have a high enough income. Most credit card companies don’t charge you any interest while you’re in repayment, and they’ll give you a break if you use your cards responsibly. If you have a low enough income, you could apply for public programs like Direct Subsidized Loans.
