The New Mexico Educational Assistance Foundation was founded in 1972 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting educational attainment and economic self-sufficiency among low-incomelow-income families. NM EAF provides financial assistance to eligible families and individuals who have children enrolled in public schools in New Mexico. The foundation offers direct cash grants to families and provides tax credits to businesses through the New Market Tax Credit program.

NAIS supports and promotes the interests of independent schools, particularly those that offer rigorous academic programs. Its membership includes nearly 1,500 member schools located in approximately 50 states and 11 countries. Through its annual conference, NAIS provides educators with current professional development training and networking opportunities.

The American Leadership Forum

The American Leadership Forum (ALF) was formed in 2009 as a collaboration between the U.S. Department of Education and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). ALF’s purpose is to bring together leaders from state and local education agencies, advocacy groups, business, philanthropy, and higher education to address systemic challenges facing public schools. ALF’s vision is a world where everyone thrives, no matter what zip code they live in. in. ALF is comprised of 12 task forces, each focused on a different topic area in education.

NGA’s primary responsibilities include advocating for policies that strengthen and protect the nation’s public schools; providing support for policymakers; building strong relationships with the federal government; and managing the operations of the NGA family.

The New Mexico Educational Assistance Foundation (NMEAF) provides scholarships to low-income students who have financial need, including those enrolled at community colleges, technical schools, trade or vocational schools, and independent study programs. Students may apply for assistance through NMEAF directly or through their school’s academic advising office. To qualify for state aid, families earning less than $31,000 per year and individuals earning less than $22,500 per year are eligible for free SHIP. To receive federal Pell grants, students must demonstrate economic hardship due to insufficient family income. Students enrolled full time in high school may also qualify for free tuition if they attend a public institution of higher education.

There are several types of grant programs available to help students pay for college expenses. These programs are designed to provide assistance to qualified students attending accredited postsecondary institutions. Funds are awarded based upon demonstrated need and eligibility. This program was created in 1972 to assist underachieving students with financial barriers to postsecondary education. SEOG funding cannot exceed the cost of attendance minus any other financial aid received by the student. Awards range from $100-$2000 per semester. Students applying for SEOG funding must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) prior to receiving funding.

The EmergencyThe Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (EESA)

This program was established after the recession of 2007. EESA is intended to provide emergency loans to students who would otherwise experience difficulty paying for college. Eligible students must have been enrolled at least half-time for the previous 12 months  and haveoans to students who would otherwise experience difficulty paying for college. NEAF’s mission is to provide financial assistance to low-incomelow-income students attending public schools in New Mexico who have been approved for  I funds. Financial aid is provided to eligible students based upon need. Students are selected to receive assistance based upon their family incomeincome and student financial need.

How does NEAF work?

NEAF processes applications electronically using its proprietary software system. Applications are reviewed for eligibility and appropriate needlevels are levels are assigned. Once accepted, candidates are notified of funding award amounts. Funds are processed directlyinto the into the bank accounts of students and parents/guardians. Students may use these funds to pay for college expenses at NM State or out-of-state institutions.

What do we fund?

NEAF provides scholarships for students majoring in engineering, science, mathematics,mathematics, and computer science. In addition, NEAF awards grants for English language learners and for those studying music, art, theater arts,arts, or dance. Scholarships and grants are awarded for high school graduation and college attendance.

Who applies?

Approximately 500 students apply for each scholarship and grant program annually. These applicants represent approximately 150 families. All applicants must meet eligibility requirements.
